Proactive market surveillance of barbecues burning solid fuels completed

12/30/2021

During the period from July to December 2021, Market Surveillance Agency of BiH and market inspections of the BiH entities and Brčko District of BiH completed joint market surveillance of barbecues burning solid fuels.

The main objective of the market surveillance was to determine whether the barbecues on the market of Bosnia and Herzegovina are safe to use, i.e. whether they comply with the requirements specified by the Law on General Product Safety (Official Gazette of BiH, 102/09) and the standard BAS EN 1860-1+A1:2019.

During the implementation of proactive surveillance of barbecues burning solid fuels, nine inspections were carried out and they included administrative verification of instructions for use, product labelling and information, as well as visual inspection and laboratory testing of samples. Seven models of barbecues burning solid fuels were tested and non-compliances were found in all seven models. Two models posed a serious risk of fire and burns.

The following non-compliances were found:

-          sharp edges on the accessible parts,

-          lack of handles on the cooking grids,

-          there are deformations and cracks which disable use and safety,

-          the thickness of the fuel compartment sheet is insufficient,

-          lack of required warnings and pictograms on the products,

-          instructions for use do not contain all the necessary information or there are no instructions at all.

Either voluntarily or by order of inspection bodies, economic operators withdrew 7 models of barbecues from the market - total of 131 products, out of which 79 products were destroyed.

Based on the results of the market surveillance activities, it can be concluded that compliance of the barbecues burning solid fuels on the market of Bosnia and Herzegovina is not satisfactory.

Therefore, we remind manufacturers, importers and distributors of barbecues burning solid fuels that they are required to ensure that these products meet all the requirements specified by the Law on General Product Safety and the standard BAS EN 1860-1+A1:2019, primarily all the necessary information and warnings for safe use of the product.
