10/2/2025

Market Surveillance Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina and competent inspection authorities of the Federation of BiH, Republic of Srpska and Brčko District of BiH have carried out joint proactive market surveillance of hair care appliances.

Hair care appliances, such as hair dryers, hair straighteners, hair curlers or electric hairbrushes, are very widespread and popular electrical products. We can say that they have become an essential part of everyday life. However, these appliances may pose certain safety risks, given that they are electrical products. The risks are not negligible, and when designing and manufacturing these electrical products, special attention is paid to meeting safety requirements.

Hair care appliances are safe if they meet the safety requirements specified in the Order on electrical equipment designed for use within certain voltage limits (Official Gazette of BiH, 98/09) and the standards BAS EN 60335-1 and BAS EN 60335-2-23.

During the implementation of proactive surveillance of hair care appliances, fourteen (14) inspection controls were carried out. Inspectors performed administrative and visual control of the products, and they selected nine (9) different models for laboratory testing. The test results show that seven (7) samples (78%) did not meet the prescribed safety requirements.

Risk assessment found that all the non-compliant models of hair care appliances pose a serious risk to consumers, because they pose risk of electric shock and fire to the user. Accordingly, measures were taken to withdraw the products from the market and destroy them. As a result of the measures taken, 132 products were withdrawn from the market and destroyed.
