Proactive market surveillance of laser products completed

2/1/2022

During the period from November 2021 to January 2022, Market Surveillance Agency of BiH and market inspections of the BiH entities and Brčko District of BiH completed joint market surveillance of laser products.
The main objective of the surveillance was to determine whether the laser products on the market of Bosnia and Herzegovina are safe to use. In order to place laser products on the market of Bosnia and Herzegovina, they shall be safe in accordance with the Law on General Product Safety (Official Gazette of BiH, 102/09) and the safety requirements specified in the standard BAS EN 60825-1:2016.

During the implementation of proactive surveillance, 6 inspection controls of laser products were conducted. Inspectors performed administrative control of the product markings and instructions for use. 7 models of laser products were controlled and non-compliances were found in 6 models. 5 models were not labelled with the required information and warnings specified by the standard BAS EN 60825-1:2016. One of the models is a laser product of a class higher than 2M and it poses a serious risk to consumers as it may cause eye injury and vision impairment. One model of the product was not accompanied by appropriate instructions for use. During the inspection control, inspectors also found 2 product models that were already controlled in 2018 and were found to pose a serious risk of eye injury and visual impairment. Either voluntarily or by order of the inspection bodies, economic operators withdrew 7 models of non-compliant laser products from the market - total of 189 products, out of which 112 products were destroyed. Also, the non-compliances were removed in 1 model (total of 16 products).

Based on the results of surveillance, it can be concluded that the situation on the market of BiH in terms of the safety of laser products is still not satisfactory.

We remind economic operators that the laser products of a class higher than 2M shall not be made available on the market, because they pose serious risk to consumers.
