Market Surveillance Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina and market inspections of the BiH entities and Brčko District of BiH have carried out proactive market surveillance of lighting chains (decorative Christmas lights). Proactive market surveillance was based on controlling the safety characteristics of the products with the aim of increasing the level of consumer safety.

Considering
the results of surveillance from the previous years, lighting chains are
recognized as a very risky product. The surveillance results from 2025 are
slightly better than in the previous two years, but certainly not good enough
to consider this product less risky.
Lighting
chains are considered safe if they are manufactured so that their safety characteristics
meet the requirements prescribed in the Order on electrical equipment
designed for use within certain voltage limits (Official Gazette of BiH,
98/09) and the standards BAS EN 60598-1 and BAS EN60598-2-20.
The
verification of safety characteristics is based on visual inspection of the
product, inspection of the product marking and laboratory tests. Market
inspectors carried out 14 inspection controls at various economic operators,
including controls at retail stores as well as controls at importers. 10
samples of lighting chains of different models were taken from the market for
laboratory testing. After the laboratory testing, it was determined that 6
samples (60%) did not meet the safety requirements of the Order on
electrical equipment designed for use within certain voltage limits.
Risk
assessment determined that all 6 non-compliant models of lighting chains pose a
serious risk to consumers, i.e. the
products pose risk of electric shock and fire to the user.
Based
on the ordered and taken measures, all 6 models of non-compliant lighting
chains (total of 237 products) were withdrawn from the market and destroyed.
