Proactive market surveillance of laser products completed
02/19/2021
The main objective of the project was to determine whether the laser products on the market of Bosnia and Herzegovina are safe to use and whether there have been any improvements in safety of these products compared to the results of surveillance in previous years.
In order to place laser products on the market of Bosnia and Herzegovina, they shall be safe in accordance with the Law on General Product Safety (Official Gazette of BiH, 102/09) and the safety requirements specified in the standard BAS EN 60825-1:2016.
During the implementation of proactive surveillance, 7 samples of laser products were tested in the laboratory. Laboratory tests showed that all of them pose serious risk of eye injuries and damage to sight because, according to classification in the standard BAS EN 60825-1: 2016, the average laser beam power is higher than the maximum permitted power.
In addition, the products are not labelled with the required warnings and user information specified in the standard BAS EN 60825-1:2016. During the inspection controls, inspectors also found 4 product models that were already controlled in 2018 and 2019, which have been found to pose a serious risk of eye injuries and damage to sight. Economic operators withdrew from the market and destroyed all the unsafe models of laser products (total of 143 products).
Based on the results of surveillance, it can be concluded that the situation on the market of BiH in terms of the safety of laser products is not satisfactory and there are no improvements in safety of these products compared to the results of surveillance in previous years.
We remind economic operators that the laser products of a class higher than 2M shall not be made available on the market, because they pose serious risk to consumers.
