During the period from June to October 2024, Market Surveillance Agency of BiH and market inspections of the BiH entities and Brčko District of BiH completed joint market surveillance of barbecues burning solid fuels.

The main objective of the project was to determine whether the barbecues burning solid fuels that are available on the market of Bosnia and Herzegovina are safe to use, i.e. whether they comply with the requirements specified by the Law on General Product Safety (Official Gazette of BiH, 102/09) and the standard BAS EN 1860-1+A1:2019.

During the implementation of proactive surveillance, 10 inspection controls were conducted and they included administrative verification of instructions for use, product labelling and information, as well as visual inspection and laboratory testing of samples. In total, 7 models of the barbecues were tested and non-compliances were found in all 7 models. The following non-compliances were found: release of solid combustible materials, lack of handles on the cooking grids, embers falling out of the fuel compartment openings, the fuel compartment depth is too small, there are deformations and cracks on the components which compromise use and safety, lack of required warnings and pictograms on the products, the instructions for use do not contain all the necessary information or there are no instructions at all.

Either voluntarily or by the order of inspection authorities, economic operators withdrew from the market 5 models of barbecues (total of 303 products) and removed the non-compliances in 2 models of barbecues (total of 1400 products).

Although none of the tested products poses a serious risk to consumers, based on the results of surveillance it can be concluded that the compliance of the barbecues burning solid fuels that are available on the market of Bosnia and Herzegovina is not satisfactory. Therefore, we remind manufacturers, importers and distributors of barbecues burning solid fuels that they are required to ensure that these products meet all the requirements specified by the Law on General Product Safety and the standard BAS EN 1860-1+A1:2019, primarily providing all the necessary information and warnings for safe use of the product.
